There are many great ways to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters: become a Big, a Special Events Volunteer, or inquire about a role on our leadership board.
Be a Site-Based Big
The site-based mentors are individuals from our community – local college students, senior citizens, and employees who visit on their lunch hour or after school at the Boys and Girls Club – who want to be a positive role model for young children. Our professional staff trains each Big Brother and Big Sister, and they agree to visit on a consistent basis during the school year and if available over the summer break. These volunteers will be mentoring students in the areas of language arts, math, social studies, social skill, physical education, and self-esteem.
Studies show that children who have a mentor in a site-based setting:
- 64% developed more
positive attitudes toward school
- 58% achieved higher
grades in social studies, languages and math
- 60% improved
relationships with adults and 56% improved
relationships with peers
- 55% were better able
to express their feelings
- 64 % developed higher
levels of self-confidence
- 62% were more likely
to trust their teacher
Currently, we have programs at Kaseberg Elementary School and Will C. Wood Middle School. Kaseberg is located at 1040 Main Street in Roseville. Will C. Wood is located at 6201 Lemon Hill in South Sacramento. Most Will C. Wood matches meet after school at the Boys and Girls Club on Lemon Hill. If you are able to commit to one hour per week during the child’s lunch hour, please fill out the volunteer inquiry (above) or call 916-646-9300 for more information.
Be a High-School Big
Site-Based Mentoring Program
What is it?
Site-Based mentoring matches a high-school volunteer with a child from a local elementary
or middle school. Currently we are partnering with
Kaseberg Elementary School on Main Street in Roseville and
Will C. Wood Middle School on
Lemon Hill in Sacramento.
When is it?
Mentoring takes place on the school campus at Kaseberg on Tuesdays, Will C. Wood on Wednesday and Will C. Wood matches on Friday at the Boys and Girls club after school between 3-5 p.m
Why should I get involved?
There are several good reasons to become a BIG. First of all, just by being a friend, you can make a BIG difference in the life of a child. Secondly, you can earn high school credits and third, volunteering is something that all colleges (especially scholarships) are looking to see. We will also give you a reference for your college application.
How many hours will it take?
We are asking for a one-hour commitment per week for two semesters. You must have a G.P.A. of at least 2.5. Once you decide what day(s)
you are available, we will match you with one
specific youth to work with. You can volunteer
as many as two hours per week if you so desire.
