History

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a mentoring program serving boys ages 8 to 15 and girls ages 7 to 15 primarily from single-parent homes. We aim to make a positive difference in the lives of children through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with caring adults. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program focuses on teaching children to respect others, have positive relationships with peers and family, avoid delinquency, succeed in school, and manage their feelings appropriately. Through positive, one-to-one interaction with a Big Brother or Big Sister, children learn and mature.  It is truly the Power of One.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters movement began in 1904. Locally, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento has matched thousands of young children with qualified adult mentors throughout Sacramento Yolo and Placer counties for over 45 years.  In August of 2005, the Greater Sacramento chapter expanded its service area to include San Joaquin County.
